DFI Reflection Week 9

It was so good to complete my Level 1 Google Certificate with nearly an hour to spare. I am now very tempted to do my level 2.
The last 10 weeks has given me so many skills and ideas to improve my teaching and learning. I enjoyed being able to have the time to experiment with each new skill we were taught. By going back to school and sharing with colleagues I was able to reinforce the concept also. The best PD I have had by fr and I would love to do this again as Im sure I would still learn something new.

Reflection Wk 8

Empowered

Although I wasn't here for the morning session I have taken myself through the slideshow while reading the notes.

Tips

Google sheets - It was great to learn some new features to give me some knowledge for the Google Certificate Exam. QR code formula on google sheets for student blogs. The camera on an iphone can be usedto read a qr code.
Insert image into cell - Insert - image in cell

Form turn off accepting responses when test complete
No form has a spreadsheet until you click create spreadsheet

Save sheet to doc - download sheets to doc add on
When collaborating on sheets - Lock down your data or hide a sheet

Docs to forms

Blog Stats

It was interesting to see how many statistics are  available for each blog. I chose a student to analyse their blog posts over the past few years.

Thanks for all of the tips for the google certificate test. Fingers crossed.

Reflection Wk 6

Visible:

Its not about taking away but about and.. the use of digital technology is a game changer. The whole learning journey is visible.
Accessible, available, Advance -

I need to find out about the parent portal on Hapara

When making a new site I need to spend more time planning. This will save me time in the long run and streamline my site.

Exploring Class Sites: After seeing so many amazing ideas on these sites I just want to revamp my own class site. I want to streamline it with one embedded slide for each curriculum area.

Theme and design of class site: use colours from your header image. Site to look at complimentary colours Color palettes

3 click rule - If we make learning hard to find students will lose interest
Image caousel - to display pictures on class site
Creating a timetable to display on class site - This is something I want to add to my site

Secondary Schools site planning presentation Will share this with colleagues on Friday briefing
Tips
After chatting to a colleague: Availl: download the movies, keep them plain so students can add their own creative flair
Make a gif using iphone photos loop feature

Class Sites
Looking at our class sites - this was a fantastic idea as it made me be critical and use feedback to improve my site. I added a media page with photos on it so the students can access them. I also put photo carousels on the media page.
I have decided to just update one google slide each week for each curriculum area. I have made the writing one and also begun the maths one. I now need to put the social studies together in one slide.

Week 5 Reflection

Each time I leave from one of our sessions I have a better understanding of the Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy? I am finding now as I have more knowledge I can answer those tricky questions from non believers.

Time

to implement these ideas into the classroom. By identifying only 3 ideas to share with colleagues and to implement into the classroom this has focused my time and ensured I am cementing this learning.

Cybersmart

Connect with cybersmart earning with the school values and embedded into our existing educational programme.
Smart Learners, Smart Footprint, Smart Relationships are the most fundamental to daily digital lives.

I need to put more effort into teaching cybersmart in the classroom. Often I just take it for granted that as they are Year 7/8 then they are already cybersmart. I realised today that I actually haven't read the kawa of care even though I mention it to the students I actually haven't read it "oops" Focus for this week!! I also need to take the time to become familiar with the Manaiakalani cybersmart programme.

Hapara Making Learning Visible

Mel showed me how to make groups in Hapara. This may be useful to look in only a groups drives or highlight some that need to be focused rather

Chromebooks

As I am a PC user then I knew many of the shortcuts already however it was useful to find out how to take a photo and where your photo goes to once taken. It was good to revisit some of the shortcuts I had forgotten as I don't use some of them very often. Having a link to the shortcuts key from the tips will be useful.

Ipads

I learnt lots of tips on the ipad today and would love to have a couple of ipads to use with my year 7 and 8s. Making animations would be easier using Explain Everything.

Screencastify
We have been having an issue with students sharing inappropriate images so I will revist the lessons on a smart footprint and smart relationships. I will also bring them back to the Kawa of Care that they signed and need to adhere to. Link to my recording

Week 4 Reflection

I arrived at today's session under the weather however I wasn't going to miss out on the session after reading the programme for the day.  was not disappointed as the presentation was fun and informative and being run by a vibrant presenter that made everything exciting.

OMG Tech Trailblazers is the site to access all of the activities. I had been lucky enough to attend a course by Tim Bell so to revisit some of the computer science activities was fantastic.

The coding activities were introduced at a good pace which allowed me to finally get the idea and I now have the confidence to be able to teach this to my students.

Using these ideas in my classroom

This week I shared with my class and another homeroom the videos of big dog and automated planes and cars. We looked at the ethics and morals scenarios and the discussions around these were amazing.
I have begun coding and we are using the compute it as a warm u to one of our lessons is a day.

Week 3 Reflection

What I took from the Create part of the session this morning was that create isn't limited to what we can do on our devices. To be honest I had started to take away the create off the devise option even though I could see that some of my students love to create offline.By providing multi models of teaching and learning students are empowered to choose how they are going to create.

Multi modal provides multiple opportunities to learn a concept. What engages one learner doesn't necessarily engage another. Engage your students to enable you to hook them in for the topic. Immersion assembly was a great idea from today to introduce the term's topic. Invest the time in something that you are able to use again. It was great to have the time to create a site today as that is something us teachers don't seem to have much of. I would love to use this with my students and get them to create a site.

I am finding that sharing what I am learning in our DFI course with my colleagues and students each week is allowing me to cement these skills.
Tips
  • Show a video before you read a book to enable all students to have that prior knowledge and vocabulary.
  • Guided browsing in Hapara - use in testing situations or when you want to restrict them to one page. Top right

Link to my acceptance site.
